13 Common UK ETA Mistakes (and How to Avoid Them)

Even simple errors can delay an ETA or cause problems at the gate. Use this checklist to avoid the mistakes we see most often:

  1. Name doesn’t exactly match the passport. Use the same spelling and order (including middle names) as printed.
  2. Wrong passport number. Double‑check each character; don’t confuse 0 (zero) with O (letter O), or 1 with I.
  3. Expired or soon‑to‑expire passport. If your passport expires before 2 years, your ETA ends early too.
  4. Typos in date of birth or nationality. Details must match your passport.
  5. Using a different passport to travel. Your ETA is digitally linked to the exact passport used to apply.
  6. Incorrect email address. Without a working inbox you might miss the decision or reference number.
  7. Payment card declines. Enable international transactions and confirm sufficient funds; try another card if needed.
  8. Uploading a poor photo (if requested). Use a recent, well‑lit portrait on a plain background; no filters.
  9. Assuming an ETA guarantees entry. It doesn’t—border officers can still refuse entry if you don’t meet visitor rules.
  10. Choosing the wrong route. If you have a complex history (e.g., previous refusals), consider applying for a Standard Visitor visa instead.
  11. Cutting it too close. Most decisions are fast, but allow up to 3 working days in case of checks or busy periods.
  12. Purpose of visit mismatch. Tourism, short business, short‑term study, transit and certain creative/paid engagements are fine—other activities may require a visa.
  13. Multiple applications for the same trip. One valid ETA is enough while it’s active; re‑apply only if your details change or it expires.

Pro tip: a 5‑minute pre‑submit review

  • Compare your data character‑by‑character with your passport.
  • Confirm your inbox is reachable and check spam.
  • Check your card works for international online payments.
  • Make sure your trip fits the visitor rules (and your plans don’t involve paid work beyond the specific concessions).
